Line profiles of various infrared atomic hydrogen lines (Paβ at 12818 Å, Brγ at 21655 Å, Brα at 40512 Å and Pfβ at 46525 Å have been measured using IRSPEC, ESO's cryogenic infrared spectrograph. The spectra of Brα were taken at a resolution λ/Δλ of ≍ 1360 or 220 km s-1 (29.7 Å/pxl). The other lines were observed under similar conditions. The region showing the emission line was oversampled by a factor of two to avoid aliasing effects.
The emission profile of Brα is of particular interest since theoretical line profiles have been published for ζ Puppis. Brα is resolved (FWHM ≍1000 km s-1) and appears to be rather symmetric. The centre of the line is slightly blue shifted (≍200-220 km s-1). The observed peak to continuum ratio (≍60%) is roughly 3 times that given in a recently published synthetic spectrum. In contrast to the observations, the synthetic spectrum also shows blue- shifted self absorption and a red-shifted emission peak. The observed emission lines do not indicate a significant variability on a daily basis. When repeated after 4 months an almost identical line profile was observed for Brα.
