Type II Cepheids of period 1-3 days (often called BL Herculis variables) show a varied and complex pulsation pattern. Both observational and theoretical attempts to provide a detailed classification and physical explanation for these stars have been problematic and controversial. We here study the hypothesis that the stars in a subgroup (AHB1 = RRd) oscillate in the first overtone, although fundamental mode pulsation is usually taken for granted. It is shown that this hypothesis seems to give an improved and consistent description of the BL Her group in agreement with available observational data. Alternatively, the RRd stars could belong to the Anomalous Cepheids of relatively high mass. Observational tests to distinguish between the possibilities for the nature of these variables are discussed.
