Japanese IPS flare data obtained during years of high solar activity (1978-1981) are used to study the three-dimensional propagation characteristics of the flare-associated shock wave. Particular attention is given to the dynamic effects of shock-wave propagation. The results show that: (1) the propagation of the shock wave is asymmetrical relative to the normal direction of the flare; (2) the propagating range of the latitudes is less than that of the longitudes; and (3) there are sharp east-west and north-south asymmetries in the shock wave energy distribution which determine the anisotropies of shock wave propagation. The results suggest both magnetic structures near the sun and interplanetary large-scale solar wind structures have significant modulating effects on the three-dimensional propagation of the shock wave.
