Results are discussed for previously published optical polarization and infrared mapping surveys of five dark cloud complexes (Rho Ophiuchi, R Corona Austrina, Lynds 1450, Lynds 1630, and Lynds 1551). The results are discussed in the context of likely scenarios for the evolution of these clouds, with particular emphasis on the role of magnetic fields in the evolution. An attempt is made to evaluate what factors are important in determining the ability of massive clouds to form stars.
