The authors have obtained deep multicolor CCD surface photometry for three extreme examples of smooth-armed spirals, galaxies with a global spiral pattern but with little or no interstellar gas, dust, or recent star formation. Two of the galaxies, NGC 7743 and NGC 495, possess moderate-amplitude, red arms which are identical in color to the underlying disk. This implies that at least 70% of the observed arm amplitudes in these galaxies arise from a surface density perturbation in the disk, and that the visible light effectively traces the structure of the density wave. In NGC 718 one of the smooth arms is noticeably bluer than the disk, but the observed arm colors and amplitudes indicate that roughly half of the observed amplitude is due to a spiral density perturbation. These galaxies strongly resemble recently published N-body models of bar-driven stellar disks.
