The present discussion of the general properties of stellar eigenmode oscillations gives attention to recent observational and theoretical developments in solar seismology and to the pulsations and oscillations of newly discovered variable stars. It has come to be expected that oscillations, of however small amplitude, wil be ubiquitous among stars. One of the most important characteristics of the newly discovered variables discussed is that their oscillations are multiperiodic. The effects of rotation and magnetic fields on stellar oscillations remain to be theoretically clarified.
