The GEOS-2 spacecraft electric and magnetic field instruments have been used to measure the energy flow at geostationary orbit for three substorm onsets. The Poynting vector has been calculated in field aligned coordinates and shows very little field aligned energy flow at ULF frequencies. Instead a radial, damped, compressional wave-like energy flow is observed. For one onset both GEOS-2 and the BGS ground magnetometer array were available. This onset shows similar frequency pulsation activity in the auroral zone and in space, but activity of a different frequency and character at mid-latitudes. Again the space signature is almost totally compressional. It is concluded that while the ground auroral signature may be characterized by an Alfven wave, most regions of space see a primarily compressional signal. This signal can propagate across field lines to stimulate the lower latitude activity.
