The history of the construction of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) between 1974 and 1979 is examined. Consideration is given to the beginnings of the CFHT program, site selection, the administrative aspects of the program, and the roles of the participating countries in the development and construction of the telescope. The configuration of the CFHT is illustrated and the process of reassembling the telescope at Mauna Kea, Hawaii is described. The development of the telescope's mirror, control system, dome, and mechanical structure is reviewed.
