Solar Activity Cycles: Solar-Terrestrial Relations

Scientific paper

Climatic oscillations with periods of 100, 200, and 2600 yr are positively correlated with similar oscillations in solar activity: higher solar activity is correlated with warmer climate. Geological data from varved clays indicate that the length of the solar-climate cycle has decreased from 23.4 yr to 11 yr over the past 2.5 thousand million years. During the great Ice Ages, these cycles were 12 yr long; during the interglacial periods, they were 10 yr long. It is suggested that these oscillations may be associated with variations in solar activity and solar luminosity.
