The He I 2058-micron line in the spectrum of SN 1987A is used for the diagnostics of the physical conditions in the supernova envelope. The intensity of the emission indicates that the abundance of helium in the zone of the bulk of energy deposition is between 0.1 and 0.2. From an analysis of the blue wing of the 2058-micron absorption wing, the energy deposition rate due to Co-56 decay in the outer layers on the 255th day after explosion is shown to be about 3 X 10 to the -10th erg/cu cm s. This value is an order of magnitude lower than the value in the model proposed to explain the early appearance of gamma rays from SN 1987A.
