Consideration is given to a model with a freely precessing neutron star for the explanation of the 35-day cycle in the X-ray pulsar Her X-1. The formula is deduced for the variation of the observed period of the pulsar during this precession. It is obtained that a rotating magnetized neutron star, as a rule, has a form of either aligned symmetrical top or three-axial figure, and the formation of the inclined symmetrical top is very problematic. It is shown that many peculiarities of the shape variation of the pulse, observed during the 35-day cycle, cannot be explained in the model of a freely precessing neutron star, but can be explained in the model of a precessing accretion disk with the distance between its inner boundary and stellar surface equal to 10 stellar radii.
