Evolution away from the zero-age horizontal branch is presently identified as the basis of the observed range of apparent magnitudes of RR Lyrae variables in a given cluster, on the basis of data for periods, temperatures, and magnitudes of cluster variables in numerous pertinent galaxies. It is shown that, in a given cluster, the RR Lyrae stars that are brighter than others of the same color are those which have longer periods by factors that would be expected, on the basis of the larger radii calculated by proceeding on the assumption that the brighter observed luminosities are real.
