The effects of MHD disturbances on line-tied coronal equilibria are analyzed. The methods developed to study these effects are described. It is observed that the kink instability is weak even for long lengths, generating dimensionless force eigenvalues less than O(0.01), and the Gold-Hoyle field is most unstable for long lengths, but is influenced by line-tying and has the longest critical length. It is noted that the power release over the linear phase is at least three orders of magnitude below dimensional expectation.
