We study the nonlinear decay of the inflaton field with quartic potential, V<=ft( φ ; ) = (1)/(4)λ φ 4 , using the Galerkin projection method that provides a natural mode decomposition of the field in close analogy to a QFT treatment. Basically, we have shown that three distinct phases are definitely characterized according to the role of the nonlinear couplings in the dynamics, starting from the linear regime of parametric resonance towards a final turbulent phase dominated by the nonlinear effects and connected to the chaotic behavior of all modes, when the state of thermalization is accomplished.
