The properties of the expansion coefficients of a scattering matrix describing the transformation of the Stokes parameters of a beam of light are studied. Inequalities for the expansion coefficients are analyzed, and emphasis is placed on strict-forward and strict-backward scatterings. Relations involving series of expansion coefficients are considered, along with linear interactions between different types of expansion coefficients for spheres. Numerical data are used to verify the relations for the expansion coefficients, and some applications are pointed out.
