An investigation of P/Halley at geocentric and heliocentric distances of 9.5 and 10.1 AU, respectively, is carried out on the basis of CCD frames obtained from a 1.5-m telescope during 6 nights in January, 1989. Observations and reductions are described, and it is noted that the frames are calibrated by the means of standard stars in the E4 field, except for January 4, when the F762-8 field is used. The nucleus is detected as a seeing-limited point source superimposed upon an extended coma. Astrometric positions and nuclear magnitudes are presented, along with coma magnitudes and stellar occultation. The measured mean brightness of the nucleus (13.44) is 0.5 mag brighter than the mean values before perihelion and at a postperihelion distance of 8.5 AU. The density and overall distribution of the dust in the coma remains unchanged between heliocentric distance of 8.5 and 10.1 AU.
