The design of Salyut, the stages of its flight, and scientific experiments carried out on board are described. The scientific program for the Salyut crew included medico-biological, astrophysical and physical studies, comprehensive experiments in photography and the spectrography of the earth with the aim of investigating the environment, and envisaged the testing of the Salyut equipment systems. Records of communication sessions between the Salyut crew and the flight control center, excerpts from the cosmonauts' diaries, and numerous photographs are included along with a detailed scientific account of various aspects of the experiments carried out by the Salyut crew.
