The presence of magnetic fields in the extended circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars and in the central stars of planetary nebulae (PNe) raises the question whether magnetic fields may play a role in the complex structures seen in high resolution optical images of PNe. We identify extreme filaments as possible examples of magnetic structures in PNe, and find that the fields required for coherence are consistent with those found in AGB envelopes. Our results suggest that magnetic fields in PNe may have a localized and thread like geometry.
