Observations obtained by IRAS are characterized and classified in a general review. Consideration is given to the discovery of dust bands in the solar systems; the search for comets and asteroids; detection of particle rings around Vega; exploration of star-formation regions; and studies of developed stars, stars near the Galactic center, the spectra of planetary nebulae, Galactic dust clouds, nearby galaxies, and optically faint IR galaxies. The value of the luminosity-calibrated IRAS 60-micron galaxy survey (covering almost the entire sky) for cosmological investigations is indicated, and sample images, spectra, and graphs are provided.
