The application of speckle interferometry (SI) through the evaluation of the angular power spectrum of images detected by an instrument at the University of Nice is described. The power spectrum is averaged from the Fourier transforms for the target and the energy transfer function for the telescope-atmosphere. The data are acquired with a one-dimensional instrument which records intensity fluctuations and thus permits measuring parameters such as the angular separation or diameters of stellar objects. The instrument has also been employed to study the space-time properties of speckle patterns of objects. A randomly jittered speckle pattern model has been defined which increases the SNR and provides an angular improvement in the point spread function width. A cross-spectrum analysis technique is also described, and the limitations imposed on its accuracy by atmospheric turbulence are quantified.
