An analysis of magnetograms from the global network of stations shows that there is a linear relationship between (Dst)max and Delta Fmax, the total disturbance vector from polar electrojets. In addition, (Dst)max and Delta Fmax are related by a linear dependence with lg epsilon maxs, where epsilon is the flux of solar-wind electromagnetic energy entering the magnetosphere; the limiting value of epsilon is 5 x 10 to the 21st erg/s. Finally, it is shown that the transfer of solar-wind energy to the magnetosphere is connected with the Y-component of the interplanetary electric field VBs.
