There are many fundamental questions concerning the origin, evolution, and current state of the Saturnian satellites following the initial exploration by the Voyager spacecraft. A reflection spectrometer operating from the visible to the near infrared (≡0.3 to 5 micrometers) and having the ability to spatially resolve and map features in the satellites and rings is an important part of the Cassini strawman payload. Such an experiment will allow studies of the surface composition of these bodies, the relation of compositional variations to geology and tectonics, and the search for non-ice volatiles.
