Decades of telescopic studies and three spacecraft fly-bys have not solved basic problems of the nature, origin and evolution of the satellites of Saturn, though one has enough information to allow one to ask the relevant important questions. Most of the satellites are icy objects with nearly pure frozen water on their surfaces. Notable exceptions are the dark hemisphere of Iapetus and the captured object Phoebe. Small amounts of non-water contaminants may occur in the surface ices of several of the larger satellites, and Hyperion may contain a large amount of contaminant.
