Ices (water ices and possibly ammonia hydrate ices) are a major component of the majority of the outer solar system solid bodies. Also on most of these bodies impact cratering is one of the most important surface forming processes. Observations on satellites of Jupiter and Saturn show that most craters in icy targets comprise the same morphologic sequences from simple craters to complex craters. Experimental craters in pure ice targets in the strength regime are 3 to 6 times larger than in solid rocks. However, most of the observed craters on satellites were produced in the gravity regime and they are not significantly larger than craters in solid rocks for the same impact conditions.
