Spectral observations of AN Ursae Majoris carried out in 1981 and 1983 are described and variations of the equivalent widths, profiles, intensities, and radial velocities of emission lines are determined. It is found that AN UMa is a close binary system with component mass ratio less than about 0.4. Its accretion rate is variable and nearly critical, resulting in the ejection of material from the system. This material forms an envelope which absorbs the X-ray emission of the central component; thus its low X-ray luminosity is accounted for.
