The detection of 21 cm neutral atomic hydrogen in absorption toward the young planetary nebula IC 4997 (PK 58 - 10.1) at the velocity of the approaching edge of the nebular shell is reported. The optical depth of the line is 0.13 + or - 0.02, and the gas is well distinguished from any Galactic H I. The paper derives a nominal mass in neutral hydrogen of 0.001 solar masses and comparable amounts of neutral hydrogen and ionized gas in the nebula.
