The mechanism proposed by Koenigl (1984) and Koenigl and Choudohuri (1985) to explain synchrotron emission from galactic radio jets such as NGC 6251 (as the dissipation of the magnetic energy keeping the jet magnetic field in a minimum-energy helical configuration) is analyzed critically. The magnetic energy available to produce synchrotron radiation is shown to be proportional to an expression which vanishes under the conditions defining the minimum-energy helical state. It is argued that the helical or azimuthal symmetry of the jet magnetic-field configuration cannot determine the availability of magnetic energy to produce synchrotron emission.
