It is suggested that SS 433 is a triple star, containig a short-period (1.5 d) binary like Sco X-1, orbiting a massive OB star in 13 d. Polar jets produced by the Sco X-1-like close binary can precess, with the period observed, if this binary is misaligned with the larger binary. The possible evolutionary history of such a system is discussed, starting from a triple star somewhat like either Lambda Tau or VV Ori.
