The physical relationship between the ionospheric plasma behavior as measured with the EISCAT UHF radar and the energy sources observed by the AUREOL-3 satellite on June 2, 1982 is investigated using a time-dependent model computation. Results indicate good agreement between radar-inferred and model-predicted electron density, ion composition, and plasma (ion and electron) temperature, though it is noted that the ion composition must be determined from the measured autocorrelation function simultaneously with the plasma density and temperature in order to obtain such agreement. It is shown that classical collisions between the precipitating auroral electron beams and the neutral atmosphere as well as Coulomb collisions between suprathermal electrons and the thermal plasma are sufficient to explain the present temperature and density structure of the ionosphere.
