A number of authors have derived distance estimates to spiral galaxies based on correlations between apparent luminosities and some standard-candle measure of their intrinsic luminosity. Those methods are necessarily predicated on the assumption that the program galaxies are 'normal', at least in terms of the measured quantities. Here it is noted that at least two of the arguments for placing NGC 4569 significantly foreground to the rest of the Virgo cluster - the Tully-Fisher relation using the H I linewidth, and the bulge luminosity-line index relation postulated by Cowley, Crampton, and McClure - are flawed due to peculiarities in the nucleus and disk of that galaxy. Revised Tully-Fisher distance estimates, based on new optical rotation-curve data, place NGC 4569 within 2sigma of the mean Virgo cluster distance. An important consequence of this result is that the widely used H I linewidth Tully-Fisher relation may be inapplicable to some environmentally modified cluster spirals.
