The Petrology, mineralogy and phase composition of the Siena chondrite has been studied. On the basis of the olivine composition the meteorite belongs to the LL-group. It is a "polymict breccia" with structurally different lithic fragments in a pronounced chondritic matrix. Although the olivine has an almost constant iron-magnesium ratio throughout the meteorite, pyroxene, plagioclase and chromite vary in different parts. Consequently, metamorphic equilibrium after agglomeration of the various components can be ruled out both because of overall structure and phase composition. The possibility that different fragments were "equilibrated" separately to the same olivine composition appears remote. Fragments and matrix are probably syngenetic and the Siena stone is best interpreted as an ignimbritic rock or "welded tuff".
