UBVRI and UBVJHK multiaperture photometry results are presented for 56 southern compact galaxies (CGs), together with basic properties for 35 of these that were derived from spectroscopic and photometric observations. CGs constitute a very heterogeneous group that ranges in absolute magnitude from -16 to -23; their high surface brightness often masks their morphological substructure. The present spectroscopy was carried out at a dispersion varying from 114 to 244 A/mm.
