The authors present optical (9 filters in the 13 colour system) and near infrared (JHKL) photometry of NGC 7538-IRS 5, 6, and 7. [2.23 μm] mapping of the central part of the nebula yielded new infrared sources and the extended nature of NGC 7538-IRS 5. This star has a significant excess in the [3.8 μm] passband, probably caused by circumstellar dust of Tdust ≤ 800K, and is less luminous than NGC 7538-IRS 6, being most probably of spectral type O9. Photometry of stars NGC 7538-IRS 5 and 6 gives a Cygnus type interstellar extinction law, with Av/E(B-V) = 3.6, and a photometric distance estimate to the nebula of 2.2 kpc. The authors' kinematic and photographic study of NGC 7538 confirms previous results by Deharveng et al. (1979). Intrinsic colours of hot and intermediate hot stars in the (optical) 13 colour and infrared (JHKL'M') systems are also discussed.
