An evaluation is made of currently available IR detector arrays, with a view to devices under development which will become available in the nest several years. In the latter category are 256 x 256 HgCdTe SWIR arrays and 256 x 256 InSb arrays, both for operation in the 1-4.8 micron range. In general, is is anticipated that design goal for arrays for ground-based facilities in the 1-30 micron range will possess the largest feasible formats, while longer wavelengths will be addressed by small arrays of individual bolometers or photoconductors.
