A fundamental limitation of ground-based interferometry is poor sensitivity; its enhancement has been undertaken by means of a triple-correlator for closure phase measurement which makes highly efficient use of the photons detected, and which incorporates provisions for accurate closure-phase calibration. Because a major limitation of pupil-plane combination is the very narrow field-of-view for imaging, the design of the triple correlator has had to be compatible with the use of a low-resolution dispersive spectrometer and imaging photon-counting detector.
