There is evidence that a small population of voids with diamter 30 h-1Mpc (or larger) exists in the neutral hydrogen distribution at redshifts around two. The structure of this distribution is very different from that of present-day galaxies, where voids fill most of space. It is not known whether this difference reflects the differing epochs from which the data are drawn or differences between the galaxy and Lα forest population (even if observed at the same redshift). Evidently these voids are not caused by local ionization effects around quasars. The possibility remains that the large-scale distributions of both populations are driven by the same dynamical processes.
