The Astron orbital station, designed for UV and X-ray astrophysical observations, was injected into earth orbit on March 23, 1983. The main orbital parameters and their evolution under the effect of gravitational perturbations are examined, and the main characteristics of the onboard systems and the scientific instrumentation are discussed. The scientific results of five years of operation are summarized in some detail.
