The existing Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic data relevant to oceanic mantle domains are examined. The oceanic data set, consisting of 318 samples from 43 islands or island groups, was plotted on Sr-Nd-Pb isotope correlation diagrams, and it is shown that the data base supports the identification of four principal end-member isotopic components in oceanic basalts proposed by Zindler and Hart (1986) as the DMM (depleted MORB mantle), HIMU (high U/Pb), and two enriched-mantle components EM I and EM II. It is unequivocally demonstrated that the large-scale isotope anomaly in the Southern Hemisphere mantle reported by Hart (1984) is real. It is also shown that the mesosphere boundary layer model of Allegre and Turcotte (1985) can be reconciled with available data.
