The IRAS Point Source Catalog has been used to produce infra-red maps of the sky in an effort to find candidate extragalactic objects near the Galactic plane. Objects in our Galaxy were removed on the basis of infra-red colour and flux criteria, and the resulting maps of these components are also presented. The authors discuss several interesting features on these maps including the relative appearance of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a hitherto unrecognised supercluster north of the LMC and a remarkable asymmetry in the position of the Galactic bulge. The reliability of the sources and significance of the features on the extragalactic map are subsequently assessed in several ways. Finally a list of potential applications of these data is given.
