In astrophysics and cosmology, the equations of general relativity for the case of spherical symmetry and a perfect fluid are often taken in a form derived by Podurets, and Misner and Sharp in 1964. It is pointed out that these equations, due to the peculiar nature of their derivation, give questionable results when applied to metrics that are static of of the Kantowski-Sachs type. Solutions of these two types are re-examined.
