Most of the star forming regions within 200 pc from the Sun are located
South of the celestial equator. Brown dwarfs or strong candidates have
been discovered in all of them, and have been often studied at multiple
wavelengths. This paper summarizes some highlights of the research on
young brown dwarfs in these regions.
