Observations of polar motion and the rotational speed of the earth are reviewed along with improvement in the present observational techniques, development of new observational techniques, and the analysis of the observations in relation to geophysical phenomena. Consideration is given to classical techniques, Doppler techniques, radio interferometry, and laser ranging to earth satellites and to the moon. In addition to these, research has also been concerned with the analysis of the observations of polar motion and the length of the day and in development of earth models to represent these data. It is noted that observational data are an important factor in the better understanding of the phenomena which affect the orientation of the earth in a coordinate system which is fixed in space.
