The exosphere of Venus observed with a Lyman-alpha photometer carried on Venera 9 and 10 space probes is examined. Previous information on this exosphere, mission profile and instruments, the intensity measurements, the dayside and nightside exospheres, and dark and bright disks are discussed. The Venus exosphere appears to be strongly asymmetric with an exobase temperature Te = 500 K plus or minus 100 K on the dayside, and about 200 K on the nightside. This is in agreement with the Mariner 5 and 10 data, but some previous hot and cold component models cannot explain intensity or reduction line-width measurements of this experiment. The intensity measured on the disk shows the importance of the upward flux of hydrogen resulting from the large day and night temperature difference. The line profile measurements of the Lyman-alpha emission performed for Venus the first time produced evidence of perturbation of exosphere in the area of the bow-shock resulting from the interaction of the solar wind with the Venus magnetosphere.
