The origin of life on earth and necessary conditions for the origin and evolution of life on terrestrial-type planets are discussed. The possibility that life may have evolved on Mars and Venus is considered, and some speculations are offered concerning the origin and evolution of intelligent beings outside the solar system. It is suggested that the origin of such intelligent beings and their evolution to the stage of developing a scientific and technical civilization comparable to that now existing on earth would require a time comparable to that required for these processes on earth, that such civilizations may occur only on single planets associated with stars of types F7 through G (and perhaps very few K- and M-type stars), and that planetary systems at the same evolutionary stage as the solar system are rare.
