Scientific paper

The paper deals with the program concept, mission characteristics, and technical requirements for the ESA and NASA sponsored International Solar Polar mission in which two spacecraft will be sent into a heliospheric orbit, approximately at right angles to the ecliptic plane. The use of an inertial upper stage for interplanetary orbit injection and of Jupiter swing by techniques for final targeting into a solar polar orbit constitute the unique features of the mission profile. The spacecraft design evolved from solutions of problems involving radiation, field of view, magnetic and electromagnetic interference, thermal stability, and structural stability. The spacecraft launch and orbital configurations are illustrated, and the functional block diagram is discussed.
