X-ray burst sources are reviewed. Attention is given to the discovery of X-ray bursters associated with globular clusters by the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite and to the emission characteristics of type I sources and the only known type II source, the rapid burster (MXB 1730-335). Simultaneous optical and X-ray observations of X-ray bursters by international teams of investigators including those at ESO are presented, and implications of the observations for the thermo-nuclear flash model of neutron star X-ray bursting are considered.
