A map has been prepared of nebulosity in the region of the South Celestial Pole from UK 1.2-m Schmidt telescope plates taken at Siding Spring Observatory. The nebulosity is very extensive and generally of very low surface brightness. It is suggested that it is predominantly reflection nebulosity, with the main source of illumination being the integrated star-light of the Carina spiral arm. The bulk of the nebulosity appears to be in the form of a broken layer underlying the local galactic plane at an altitude of 40-80 pc.
