The velocities of separation of the components of extended double radio sources are estimated from the statistical properties of the ratio of separations Q = D1/D2 of the components from the nucleus. For a carefully selected sample of these sources, the distribution of Q is strongly peaked towards the value Q = 1 and requires that the velocities of advance of the heads of the components through the intergalactic gas are on average less than 0.2 c. The implications of these results for the physical conditions around these radio sources are discussed.
