The technical problem of background subtraction in surface photometry of galaxies is considered in relation to the numerical-mapping procedure that is the first step in reducing PDS scans of photographic plates. The problem of background is reviewed, and a background-subtraction algorithm is described. It is shown that with this algorithm only 42 matrix elements for a normal system must actually be evaluated.
