The petrography, chemical composition and mineralogy of the meteorite which fell through the roof of a school in Naragh, Iran on August 18, 1974 are examined. Polished thin sections from various portions of the Naragh meteorite were examined by petrographic microscopy and electron microprobe analysis; point count, X-ray fluorescence and classical chemical analyses were also used to determine meteorite chemical compositions. The meteorite is found to be fine grained and porphyritic with phenocysts of olivine and pyroxene, olivine and glassy chondrules and a matrix of plagioclase grains and laths, olivine-pyroxene crystals, Fe-Ni mesostasis and phosphate minerals. The bulk chemical composition, Fe/SiO2 and metallic Fe/total Fe ratios (0.71 and 0.45, respectively), Fa composition of olivine grains and the high Ca content of orthopyroxenes are consistent with an H-6 group classification. Textural evidence also indicates that the Naragh meteorite experienced high-temperature metamorphism and a post-metamorphic collision.
